Camping
Situated on the tranquil shores of Coralville Lake, Sugar Bottom Recreational Area campground offers 232 RV and tent campsites with electric hookups, as well as non-electric walk-to sites. The day-use location also features a beach, disc golf course, and hiking trails. Wildlife including white-tailed deer, turkeys, and pheasants roam the park’s woodland areas.
Sewer – Offers sewer connections at some or all campsites. This allows you to drain your gray and black water tanks.
Boating
Located on the shores of Coralville Lake, Sugar Bottom Recreational Area offers camping, hiking trails, disc golf courses, lake fishing, and water skiing. The park also includes day-use picnic areas, a beach, playground, and boat ramps.
The lake’s dam is home to several angling opportunities, including large and smallmouth bass, crappie, and walleye. Within the park, you’ll find several miles of scenic crushed limestone multi-use trails running through oak/hickory forest and alongside restored Iowa prairie. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, turkeys, and pheasants. The nearby Devonian Fossil Gorge and Coral Ridge Mall provide additional recreation options. The campground also accepts pets.
Fishing
On the tranquil banks of Coralville Lake and not too far from the Iowa River, Sugar Bottom Recreational Area is an outdoor haven with camping grounds, hiking trails, disc golf, and fishing. But one hidden trail here may be the most magical of all.
This park offers a variety of recreation and vacation opportunities, including lake and river fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, and picnicking. Other attractions include a five-mile crushed limestone multi-use trail and the Devonian Fossil Gorge. If you have a love of hiking, take the time to explore the trails at this park. The Sugar Bottom Recreational Area features 17 trails ranging from beginner to advanced.
Hikers can choose to hike on the Cedar Valley Nature Trail or a barrier-free asphalt trail. The trails are one-way only so please be sure to travel the route specified on each trail.
Visitors to the campground and day-use park can enjoy lake and river fishing, swimming, boating, camping, mountain biking, and disc golf. The park also offers a beach, playground equipment, and picnic shelters. Pets are welcome. The campground is located on Coralville Lake and has 232 family sites with electricity, plus four group campsites.
Mountain Biking
Located in the heart of the hardwood forest along Coralville Lake, Sugar Bottom Recreational Area is a premier mountain bike destination with expert to beginner hand-built trails. The trail system is designed with a stacked loop format.
The Sugar Bottom Trail system was formally established in 1990. Prior to that local riders were riding a small system of ad hoc trails.
The terrain is rugged and forested, so expect mud, sticks, and debris on the trail. Trails are one-way and marked as either a named or numbered trail with the 100s to 300s on the north side of the gravel access road and the green/beginner trails on the south.
Disc Golf
Disc golfers will find a challenging course with a mix of open and wooded holes overlooking Coralville Lake at Sugar Bottom Recreational Area. The 10-mile mountain bike trail also lures visitors to the area with its valleys, prairies and breathtaking views from the trails’ overlooks over the lake.
Sugar Bottom Recreational Area offers a campground, fishing dock, swimming beach, boat ramp, campsites, picnic shelters, and a disc golf course. The day-use location has a large group picnic area, flush toilets, and a playground. A hiking trail and barrier-free asphalt trail are located within the recreation area. The dam complex is home to the Devonian Fossil Gorge, which allows visitors to explore a 375-million-year-old sea floor to discover fossil remains of marine life that once lived in this tropical marine environment.
